real nest: baby gracie

Shelby and her husband Jimmy joined us for the winter session of bump camp, and in May they welcomed a beautiful baby girl to their family. Baby Gracie even made the news, as her Dad  had quite the exciting time leading the Edmonton Rush to the National Lacrosse League final.

Room Inspiration:
We were looking to create something that was sophisticated, but still had a nursery feel.  We started with the colours, white, grey, and yellow, and then once we found the rug the idea of a vintage French nursery was what we came up with.

Favourite Item:
My favourite thing is the “tree of life” wall decal.  We plan to use it to measure how Gracie grows through the years.  I also love the drum light, and appreciate my husband installing it and a dimmer switch!

The Details:
Most items came from Home Sense and the crib and change table were handed down.  The armchair was actually on clearance for $30 at Home Sense.  The only thing that was wrong with it was that the fabric didn’t match our design.  But my mom wouldn’t let that stand in the way of a great deal.  She spent hours re-upholstering it by hand.  She even had to take it all apart at one point when she realized there was a small tear in the new fabric she was using!  The dresser is Ikea, but it’s discontinued.

We love how the room turned out, and are happy it is a nursery that matches the rest of the decor in our house and has a nursery feel without being totally “baby-ish” We appreciate all the time and effort my mom put in to creating it!

colour trends… fashion and design

So we all know that colour blocking is big on the fashion scene this spring. But if you aren’t sure you can pull it off, or just have no desire to do so, it is something you can bring into the home as interior design trends often find inspiration from the runways.

So with a few cushions and throws and some new accessories you can color block your living room quite easily. Or if you are feeling daring you can design a nursery or kids room around the concept.

Here is a design board inspired by the original colour block icons themselves…..Popples.

happy nesting
